- 2024 AWSS Patricia Herlihy Graduate Research Prize Call for Nominations
The Association for Women in Slavic Studies is pleased to announce the call
for nominations for the Patricia Herlihy Graduate Research Prize, awarded
annually to fund promising graduate-level research (a) in any field of
Slavic/East European/Central Asian studies by a woman or (b) on a topic in
Women's or Gender Studies related to Slavic Studies/East Europe/Central Asia
by a scholar of any gender.
The Prize is supported by a recent endowment established in the name of Dr.
Patricia Herlihy by her colleagues, students, and family. Dr. Herlihy made
incredible contributions to the study of Ukraine and supported and mentored
generations of scholars across disciplines engaged in study on Ukraine and
its neighbors.
Graduate students who are currently enrolled and at any stage of master's or
doctoral level research are eligible. The award carries a cash prize of
$1000 that may be used to support expenses related to completion of a thesis
or dissertation, as well as travel, services, and/or materials. Nominations
and self-nominations are welcome. Recipients must be members of AWSS and, if
not current AWSS members, must join as a condition of the award. Winning
recipients should submit a report on their use of the funds to the Committee
Chair by August of the year following the receipt of the award.
A completed application consists of: (1) a 2-3 page proposal that explains
the project, how the funds will be used, and why this funding is necessary
for continued progress on the project; (2) a current curriculum vitae; (3) a
detailed budget and timeline; (4) two letters of recommendation. Application
materials in MSWord or PDF, letters of recommendation, and any questions
regarding the prize should be sent directly to the Committee Chair:

Deadline: Applications must be complete by September 1, 2024 to be
considered for the award.

2024 AWSS Heldt Prizes – Call for Nominations
The Association for Women in Slavic Studies invites nominations for the 2024
competition for the Heldt Prizes, awarded for works of scholarship published
between 15 April 2023 and 15 April 2024. To be eligible for nomination, all
books and articles must be in English.
Nominations for the 2024 prizes will be accepted for the following
categories:
• Best book introducing new, innovative, and/or underrepresented
perspectives into any area of Slavic/East European/Eurasian studies. Open to
AWSS members.
• Best book in Slavic/East European/Eurasian women’s and gender studies.
• Best article in Slavic/East European/Eurasian women’s and gender studies.
Each Heldt Book Prize carries an award of $250. Prizes will be awarded at
the AWSS reception at the ASEEES National Convention in Boston in November
2024.
2024 Heldt Book Prizes
Instructions for nominating books. One may nominate individual books for
more than one category, and more than one item for each category. To
nominate any work, please send or request that the publisher send one paper
copy to each of member of the Book Prize Committee by 31 May 2024.

2024 AWSS Heldt Prize for Best Article
in Slavic/East European/Eurasian women’s and gender studies The Association
for Women in Slavic Studies invites nominations for the 2024 competition for
the Heldt Article Prize. The Heldt Article Prize carries an award of $125.
Instructions for nominating articles. To be eligible for nomination, an
article or book chapter must be in English and published in either a journal
or edited volume between 15 April 2023 and 15 April 2024. Please send or
request that the publisher electronically send one pdf copy of the article
or book chapter (including title page and table of contents for book
chapters) to each of the four members of the article prize committee by 31
May 2024.
Prizes will be awarded at the AWSS reception at the ASEEES National
Convention in Boston in November 2024.

- 2024 AWSS Mary Zirin Prize for Independent Scholars of Slavic Studies --
Call for Nominations
The Association for Women in Slavic Studies is pleased to announce the call
for nominations for the Mary Zirin Prize in recognition of an independent
scholar in the field of Slavic Studies. This award of $500 is named for Mary
Zirin, who, working as an independent scholar, produced and encouraged
fundamental works in Slavic/East European Women's Studies, founded the Women
East-West newsletter, and was instrumental in the development of AWSS. The
Zirin Prize is open to scholars of any gender in Slavic, East European and
Eurasian Studies. We particularly encourage applications from those whose
scholarship or service focuses on women's or gender studies and encourages
the nomination of candidates from all career stages. For the purpose of this
award, an independent scholar is defined as a scholar who is not employed at
an institution of higher learning, or who is employed at a university or
college but is not eligible to compete for institutional support for
research (for example, those teaching under short-term contracts or working
in administrative posts). We welcome nominations from Central and Eastern
Europe and from Eurasia.
Nominations must include: (1) a nomination letter, no more than two pages
long, double-spaced; (2) the nominee's updated curriculum vitae; (3) a
sample publication (e.g., article or book chapter). The nomination letter
should describe the scholar's contribution to the field, as well as work in
progress.

- 2024 AWSS Student Essay Prizes
Call for Nominations
The Association for Women in Slavic Studies is pleased to announce the call
for submissions for the 2024 Undergraduate Essay Prize and the 2024 Graduate
Essay Prize.
The Undergraduate Essay Prize recognizes outstanding essays in Slavic/East
European/Eurasian women's and gender studies written by an undergraduate
student in any discipline based at any tertiary institution worldwide.
Submissions must: (1) be in English, (2) have been written while the author
was a degree-seeking undergraduate, (3) have been submitted and assessed for
an undergraduate class between August 1, 2023 and August 31, 2024, (4) be of
3,000-5,000 words in length, (5) be accompanied by a nomination letter from
the instructor of the course for which the essay was written. The instructor
must be a current member of AWSS. Letters of nomination, accompanied by an
electronic copy of the essay in either Word or PDF, should be sent
electronically to each of the committee members listed below. Be sure to
include both the permanent mailing address and email contact information for
the student.
The Graduate Essay Prize is awarded to the author of a chapter or
article-length essay on any topic in any field or area of Slavic/East
European/Eurasian Studies written by a woman-identifying scholar, or on a
topic in Slavic/East European/Eurasian Women's or Gender Studies written by
a scholar of any gender. The Graduate Essay Prize carries an award of $500.
This competition is open to current doctoral students and to those who
defended a doctoral dissertation in 2023-2024. If the submission is a
seminar paper, it must have been written during the 2023-2024 academic year;
if a dissertation chapter, it should be accompanied by the dissertation
abstract and table of contents. Previous submissions and published materials
are ineligible. Essays should be no longer than 50 double-spaced pages,
including reference matter, and in English (quoted text in any other
language should be translated). Please send a copy of the essay and an
updated CV to each member of the Prize Committee as email attachment.
Deadline for both prizes: Completed submissions must be received by
September 1, 2024.
