This award memorializes Robert C. Tucker, the distinguished political scientist, diplomat, and Stalin biographer who, as a professor of government at Indiana University, played a critical role in the formation of the Russian and East European Institute. It also honors the work of his student, Stephen F. Cohen, a preeminent scholar of Soviet and Russian political history, who held two degrees from Indiana University.
Eligibility: Must be an incoming student in the Russian and East European M.A. program, or any other M.A. program associated with REEI, who demonstrates a scholarly interest in the history and politics of the Soviet Union and/or Russia and intends to pursue a career in some field of public service, such as journalism, secondary education, non-profit work, or government. The Tucker-Cohen Fellowship is awarded every other year in even-numbered years (next award will be for students entering in 2026).
Award: Stipend of $23,000, a College of Arts and Sciences fee remission towards 12 hours of College of Arts and Sciences credit in both the Fall and Spring semesters as well as 6 hours of College of Arts and Sciences credit in the following summer session, and health insurance during the student’s first year. During the second year, the fellow receives support in the form of another fellowship or graduate assistantship so as to provide a total stipend of at least $23,000 as well as a tuition remission of at least 24 credits (12 in each semester) and health insurance.
Application: There is no separate application for this award (i.e. the standard application to the REEI M.A. program serves as application for the fellowship)
