The summer Language Workshop is proud to host the 2019 Baltic Studies Summer Institute (BALSSI), a cooperative project of the Baltic Languages Consortium and the Association for the Advancement of Baltic Studies, offering intensive Estonian, Latvian, and Lithuanian language courses. BALSSI will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2019 with a special film series, an academic symposium, guest speakers, and more.
BALSSI was founded in 1994 and is currently funded by a consortium of American universities: Indiana University, Stanford University, University of California-Berkeley, University of Illinois, University of Pittsburgh, University of Texas, University of Washington, and University of Wisconsin-Madison. BALSSI was held at Indiana University in 1998 and 1999, in 2005 and 2006, and returns for 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019.
At Indiana University, BALSSI is held in conjunction with the Language Workshop’s summer courses and benefits from the Workshop’s long experience as a leader in intensive summer language instruction and programming.
Students complete the equivalent of one year of academic instruction in the program and earn 6-8 credits, which can be transferred to other institutions.
Graduate students attending BALSSI are typically eligible for the Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) and SSRC fellowships. IU students may be eligible for further support from the university. For more details and application information visit the Language Workshop Funding and Costs section.
